What makes skin oily? Oily skin is caused by excess sebum (the skin’s natural oil) production. It can be caused by a number of factors including weather conditions, hormones and stress. Now let’s look at how we can help.
Tips For Oily Skin
Our first tip is a common misconception, don’t over wash your skin. Many people who suffer from oily skin will cleanse and exfoliate several times a day thinking that they are combating excess oil. This couldn’t be further from the truth! What really happens when you over-cleanse the skin is that too much of the skin’s natural oil gets stripped away causing overproduction of sebum! So stick to cleansing just twice daily, morning and evening, with the correct type of cleanser. Steer clear of oil based cleansers as they can lead to blocked pores, we prefer a gel cleanser like our Purifying Gel Cleanser. This cleanser deeply cleanses without stripping away the skins natural oils.
Don’t miss out your moisturiser! If your skin is over producing oils, that could be it’s why of trying to tell your it’s dehydrated. Moisturiser is an important step in a regime for any skin type. If you do suffer with dry skin steer clear of moisturisers which are too rich, or contain heavy duty ingredients such as coconut oil or shea butter. Instead, opt for a product like our Oil Free Emulsion. It minimises oil production while keeping the skin hydrated and protected against antioxidants.
Having a healthy diet really does have an impact on the health of your skin. We all love a sweet treat in the afternoon but it might be worth thinking twice. Added sugars can trigger hormones and blood sugar levels, which can lead to excess oil production, cue the midday shine! Counteract sweet cravings with natural sugars, like in a cold pressed juice. Another thing we should be limiting in our diet is saturated fat. If you consume a high level of saturated fat in your diet, this will increase your cholesterol, which in turn will lead to oily and spotty skin.
Choose you makeup wisely! Look for makeup which is non-comedogenic, this means it won’t block your pores. Avoid any makeup that will feel too heavy on your skin. Stick to mineral, and where possible, powder formulas.
Too many late nights? Sleep deprivation can be another reason for your oily skin. When we don’t get enough sleep, we should be getting 7-9 hours, it can cause a spike in androgen production. Androgen is the hormone directly responsible for stimulating oil production.
If you feel you have exhausted all options and still can’t seem to get the excess oil in your skin under control then arrange a visit to a dermatologist.
