What Activities Can Cause Rosacea?

There are many factors that can exacerbate rosacea skin. Physical activities such as jogging and even yoga increase circulation in the body, which in turn can trigger rosacea. However, rosacea can also be stimulated by emotionally stressful situations. There isn’t any conclusive data to explain the correlation between stress and rosacea skin. However, we do know that it can worsen symptoms. Emotional stress likely leads to an increase in inflammatory mediators and greater circulation to the face causing facial redness and flushing. Keep in mind that prolonged emotional stress can worsen nearly many common skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.

What Food and Drink Should You Avoid?

We’re sorry to say this but much of the cuisine you enjoy, such as spicy foods, hot drinks or alcoholic beverages can potentially exacerbate the redness in rosacea skin. What’s more, sugary and starchy foods which often also contain high levels of carbohydrates can lead to inflammation and consequent rosacea flare-up.

Can Certain Foods Help Soothe Rosacea Skin?

Don’t panic, there are specific things you can eat which won’t trigger rosacea. High-quality proteins in fish, poultry, shellfish and tofu as well as healthy fats found in avocado, seeds, nuts and olive oil can all be beneficial in calming rosacea skin. Additionally, low glycemic carbohydrates found in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lentils are thought to help minimise the inflammatory response associated with sugary foods and starchy carbs.

Skincare Essentials for Rosacea Skin

Rosacea is a photosensitive condition meaning UV rays can cause flare-ups. So of course, an SPF sunscreen with broad spectrum UV sun protection is essential. Pay attention to try of sunscreen you use though. Physical sunscreen is better for rosacea skin, as it’s formulation does not exacerbate rosacea the way a chemical sunscreen would.
