glo Foundation Guide: Identifying Your Undertone

This week we are discussing skin tones and how to work out what type of undertone you have. When trying to find the right foundation colour to match your skin perfectly, you must first determine undertone and identify any surface tones.

Differences in Terminology

There are various terms to describe different aspects of your skin colour. They are often used interchangeably, however, we think it is important to know the actual differences between them.

• Undertone: The colour of one’s skin created by both melanin and blood under the skin. Undertone designation does not change (i.e. if an individual has an olive undertone, she will be olive-toned for life).
• Complexion: How light or dark a colour is. Depending on age or exposure to the sun, one may appear darker or lighter.
• Surface tone: Varying colour on the surface of the skin (redness, hypo/hyperpigmentation, etc.).

Identifying Undertones

There are in actual fact only two types of undertones, one can have either a warm or cool undertone. And there are a few easy ways to establish what undertone you have.

How to know if you have warm undertones:

  • If your veins appear more green than blue, then you are warm-toned.
  • If you tan easily and tend not to burn after being under the sun.
  • Those with olive (yellow/green) or peach undertones.
  • They make up 97% of the population, 80% of which are yellow or olive.
  • Peach undertones generally result from yellow undertone with red surface tones.
  • Those with brown, amber or hazel eyes with red, black or strawberry blonde hair tend to be warm-toned.

How to know if you have cool undertones:

  • Those with pink, violet or blue tints to the skin.
  • Your veins appear more blue than green.
  • You go pink and burn easily from the sun.
  • A cool undertone occurs in only 3% of the population and is the result of the blood being at the skin’s surface rather than the pigment.
  • Those with blue, grey or green eyes with blonde, brown, or black hair with platinum tones are more likely to have cool undertones.

Undertones and The Appropriate Foundation

Now that you know what skin tone you have, it is time to match yourself up to the right colour foundation. Check out the example chart below where we match up undertones to our best-selling Pressed Base Powder shades.
