Winter Skin Conditions – Dry Skin vs. Oily Skin

In winter, we often neglect our skin for a number of reasons, whether out of sheer laziness, lack of awareness because we’re constantly wrapped up or you simply don’t see the point, exactly because we’re huddled under so many layers. But we’re here to tell you how the winter can impact both dry and oily skin and some tips to help prevent aggravation.

Dry Skin: 

Dry skin is one of the most common conditions people suffer with during winter. When the temperature drops, the humidity level plunges too, consequently leaving skin parched and desperate for some moisture. Here are a few tips to help your dry skin out this winter:

  • Indoor heating – Dial it down. Indoor heating strips even more moisture from the air and subsequently from your skin too.
  • Hot showers – While it may be very tempting to jump into a steaming hot shower or bath to get the frigid cold to seep away, the hot water dries out the natural oils in your skin and the longer you’re under the water, the more your skin gets dried out. So keep the shower short and sweet with water warm rather than very hot.
  • Post-shower ritual – Pat yourself dry instead of rubbing when you towel-dry, leave a little moisture on your skin and moisturise within 3 mins of stepping out the shower.

Oily Skin: 

Many think that the key to dealing with oily skin is by attacking the skin with a lot of harsh scrubs but in fact that can make it worse. It’s best to keep exfoliating to a minimum of one to two days a week, as while it may be important in the winter, over-exfoliation can cause your skin to go into defense mode and produce excess oil as oil production is increased by irritation. So when it comes to cleansing choose a gentle cleanser in winter as your skin is naturally drier and a gentle cleanser will be enough to combat oil and keep the skin clean.
